English Romantic literature in L. Tom Perry Special Collections

Although the collection of Victorian and Edwardian literature is the premier literary collection at L. Tom Perry Special Collections, we also have a significant number of first editions by Romantic authors in our holdings. This is in part because of the Edward M. Rowe Collection of William Wordsworth, but other Romantic poets like Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and John Keats are also well represented. Other highlights from the early 19th century include literary criticism by Leigh Hunt, a large collection of first editions of Sir Walter Scott’s poetry and novels, and early editions of novels by Maria Edgeworth and Jane Austen.

Here is a sampling of some of these important works held by Special Collections:

  • George Gordon, Lord Byron, Don Juan. London, 1819.
  • Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Biographia literaria. London, 1817.
  • Coleridge, Christabel: Kubla Khan, a vision; The pains of sleep. Boston, 1816 (First American edition).
  • Leigh Hunt, editor. The Liberal: verse in prose from the south. London, 1822-23.
  • John Keats, Endymion, a poetic romance. London, 1818.
  • Sir Walter Scott, Waverley, or ‘Tis sixty years since. Edinburgh, London, 1814.
  • Percy Bysshe Shelley, The Cenci: a tragedy in five acts. Italy, 1819.
  • William Wordsworth, Lyrical ballads, with other poems. London, 1800 (Second edition).
  • Wordsworth, The Excursion. London, 1814.
