VBM (Victorian Book of the Month): Steve Young vs. Polar Bears

Introducing a new series of posts: the Victorian Book of the Month! During the first week each month of 2014-15 academic year, we’ll be featuring one of the items in the Victorian Collection, from beautiful books to historic treasures to the just plain weird and wacky.

fennThis month’s featured item is Steve Young. No, of course not that Steve Young; he wasn’t born yet. This book is from 1893. It is a boy’s adventure novels by prolific author George Manville Fenn (1831-1909). This Steve Young is, like all heroes of the genre, a plucky young lad (and an orphan to boot). He proves himself during a daunting voyage to rescue his uncle who has been shipwrecked in the Arctic. Special Collections’ copy was an 1893 Christmas present to an English schoolboy named Percy Taylor.

Special Collections owns over two dozen of Fenn’s adventure novels, which represents a smallish percentage of his literary output – he wrote well over 100 books during his lifetime!

More Victorian treasures await next month….
